Store Front Design

For this assignment each group of two was assigned to a local store and we got to design a store front. My partner and I had the opportunity to do the front display of Aeropostale at the Fayette Mall. We dressed four mannequins in male clothing. The store had a picture with exactly what they wanted the display to look like. First, we walked through the entire store and had to find the clothing that the picture specified. The store manager was very strict on us getting the exact items and the exact size indicated. After finding all of the merchandise we had to make sure that all of the mannequins were 6' tall. Next, we dressed the mannequins one by one. Each time we finished one the manager would come over and approve it. Finally, after dressing all of the mannequins we put them into position in the window.

Signage

The signage assignment was probably most favorite of all this semester. The purpose of the assignment was to help us learn how to design different kinds of signage's for the retail environment. Our first instruction was to describe the "tone" or mood that we wanted to communicate through our signage program. Then we had to select a style and font for our signs. My partner and I wanted to keep ours simple because we were designing a swim shop, so we did not use much color and kept it very basic. The first one we designed was our store front sign. Here we included our store's logo which is our letter S with the water drop coming off. In the store front sign we also included our tagline, "we care about swimwear." Next, we designed a departmental sign and we chose to do kids swim wear. Again, we made it very basic and right to the point. Finally, we made a point-of-sale sign which gives information about the product and the price. We just made a 50% off sale sign with the same font as all of the other signs.

Planogram

The wall setup assignment was designed to help the designing of a wall set plan complete with store signage. For this project I used Adobe Illustrator to setup my design. I chose to do a male theme wall setup. On the left side I started at the bottom with a pair of jeans being displayed. Right above that I added in three rows of light, medium, and dark jeans folded neatly. Above that I have male polo shorts which are also folded. At the top of the left side I displayed the polo shirts so the customer can actually see them. In the middle I hung a male sport jacket which can be either dress or casual. Under that I put in shelves of accessories such as ties, belts, socks, and shoes. I designed the right side of my display to be the more dressier side. Here I started off at the bottom with a pair of khakis which are hanging and can be viewed easily. Above that are three shades of kahkis that are folded. The next row is button up dress shirts that are folded and above that shelf I put the dress shirts not folded so they can be viewed.

Lighting Plan

The purpose of the Lighting Plan assignment was to help us learn how to design a store layout plan and be familiar with different types of fixtures used in retail display. First, we had to find a lighting format for our store that would be the most effective. After finding the lighting fixtures we had to discuss the impack the lights would have on our interior lighting as well as on window lighting. My partner and I chose the lights we wanted that best fit our store. Next, we put a transparent piece of paper over the picture of our store layout and drew in where we wanted our lights to be placed. At the bottom of our project we made a key showing which lights were which on the paper.

Floor Layout

The purpose of this assignment was to help us learn how to design a store layout plan and be familiar with different types of fixtures used in retail display. My partner and I first had to decide how big we wanted our store, make entrances and windows, mark out an office area, show where the cash wrap would be located, mark off where our fixtures would be and make sure they were each three feet apart, and finally make a space for our mannequins. After doing all of this, we wrote a page explaining why we chose each of our fixtures and why each one would benefit our store. This project was really helpful and I learned a lot about store layouts and how they need to be set up. I never realized that much work went into making the layout of a store.

Shadow Box

The purpose of this assignment focused on displaying a single product. My group really had a hard time with this one mainly because it was hard to focus just on one item and still make the display interesting. We had to decide on a focal point and chose the pink razor phone. We decided hanging the phones from the top of the display would make the shadow box really stand out. At the bottom right hand corner we put a disco ball in to make the lights beam off of it and draw attention to our display.

Home Display

The Home Display assignment was designed to co-ordinate and create a home table-top display. The goal was to prepare a new tabletop display that would be displayed for only one week. Our group brought in random items from our homes and compiled them together the best we could to make a great table top setting. We had had these really nice square pink plates that were the inspiration for our table setting. We used all pastel colors to try and make the display flow better. The items are set up in a triangular shape in order to make the display easily viewed. Our group wanted to make the display more of a summer themed display so we put lemons and straws in the cups and added a newspaper accent inside of the blue pitcher. The umbrella was placed on top to try and add a more dramatic affect to the background.

Dress Display

The purpose of this assignment was to understand fashion apparel and accessor co-ordination set up in a 3-D space. We were to create a dress form and have an accessory with it. This display was for a shop window the focal poitn was and the dress form was for an effect/ look. My group chose a simple black dress and we focused on a pair of black shoes and accented them by putting red underneath to really make them stand out.

Color Wheel

The Color Wheel assignment was really interesting fun. My partner and I bought a poster board then cut a circle out of the middle to make our color wheel. We made the colors ourselves with water color paints and divided each color with a marker. The assignment was to cut out items in pure primary colors, red yellow, and blue. Then we were supposed to cut out items in the secondary colors which are green, orange, and violet. Finally, we cut out items that were in the tertiary colors. We found that the more pictures we could on the color wheel the better it looked. We cut out several things such as makeup, fruits, and even medicine bottles, matched them up with the color on the color wheel, then overlapped them making a beautiful collage.
